You Are Your Passport, So Behave Yourself 🌎 

Big Uncle’s gonna tell you something most people won’t: living abroad isn’t about race, politics, or excuses. It’s about responsibility. It’s about carrying yourself in a way that makes your community proud and doesn’t burn the bridges for the people who come after you.

When you go overseas, you stop being just an individual. You are your nationality. That’s what people see first. And if enough people from your passport screw things up — disrespecting locals, breaking visa laws, inflating prices, acting like clowns — trust me, doors will start closing.

Don’t Be That Foreigner

Here’s the Big Uncle Code:

Respect the locals’ housing market. Don’t throw money at every landlord just because it looks “cheap” compared to your home country. That drives up prices and undercuts locals.

Follow visa laws. Don’t overstay, don’t play games. You’re a guest — act like one.

Don’t undercut locals. If you’re working or running a business, don’t ruin things for people just trying to make a living.

Don’t act like a cash machine. If someone quotes you double, don’t just pay it because “it’s still cheap.” That’s how whole markets get ruined.

Show some effort. You don’t have to be fluent in the language, but at least learn the basics. Show people you care.

Respect cultural standards. Whatever you expect in your home country — respect, decency, effort — offer the same abroad.


It’s Not Complicated

This isn’t about being perfect. This isn’t about pretending you’re a local when you’ll never fully be accepted into the society (especially in Southeast Asia). It’s about being a good guest. It’s about leaving a net positive mark so that when people think of Americans, or Europeans, or wherever you’re from, they say:
“We like when people from that country come here.”

Because remember — whether you like it or not — you are your passport. And if you carry it with pride, you better behave yourself.

Don’t make excuses. Don’t blame everyone else. Get your act together, respect the place you’re in, and carry your passport with dignity. That’s the standard we demand of people who come to our countries in the West, and that’s the same standard we should hold ourselves to abroad.

You represent more than yourself when you step off that plane. So be smart. Be respectful. And above all — don’t be a sucker.
