Southeast Asia: You Can Build the Life You Want—or Totally Destroy Yourself
Southeast Asia: You Can Build the Life You Want—or Totally Destroy Yourself
Moving to Southeast Asia can be life-changing. You can start your own business, teach English to buy yourself time, improve your skills, or study something new. My wife studied cybersecurity while teaching, and I started a consulting business that lets me be location independent. I spend part of the year in Vietnam maintaining connections and the rest traveling the world, building relationships, and exploring new opportunities.
But let’s be real: this freedom is double-edged. You can do amazing things—or completely ruin your life. In many countries here, the laws exist—but enforcement is often flexible, creating temptations that can destroy even a reasonably stable person. Pharmacies sell drugs over the counter that would be illegal elsewhere, cheap alcohol is everywhere, and being near the Golden Triangle means some of the world’s best heroin is within reach.
There are serious practical risks too. There are no real social services. Hospitals may refuse treatment if you can’t pay. Human rights are literally a Western concept—these countries may pay lip service, but in practice, they don’t exist. If you get on the wrong side of the law, you are largely on your own. Your safety and wellbeing are entirely in your hands.
Women, nightlife, drugs, alcohol—the freedoms here come with real consequences. I’ve seen foreigners living on the streets, destitute, suffering from drug abuse or violence. Cambodia, in particular, has extreme cases—but it’s not absent in Vietnam and other countries. A person without impulse control or mental stability can spiral fast. I’ve even had a meth-addicted foreigner pull a knife on me in Phnom Penh.
For those who have their life together—even if they’re just starting to get things on track—Southeast Asia offers incredible opportunities. You can teach, learn, travel, build a business, and create a life you never imagined. But remember: wherever you go, there you are. Your choices determine whether this is a launchpad for success or a pathway to disaster.
I tell clients this upfront because I want them to be healthy, happy, and successful. Southeast Asia can transform your life—but only if you respect the freedom, control your impulses, and make smart choices.
