πŸ‡»πŸ‡³ Vietnam Police Arrest 12 Men in Massive Cat-Theft Ring

Ho Chi Minh City police have arrested 12 men accused of operating a network that stole and resold approximately 2,700 cats for meat.

According to investigators, the groups operated throughout the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, going out at night and using traps to steal cats from residential neighborhoods. Police broke up the network and seized 50 cats, 55 traps, and two scales. Some of the cats have already been returned to their owners, while others are being cared for as authorities try to locate their families.

First of all, credit to the Vietnamese police. They investigated the operation, arrested the people allegedly responsible, and are working to reunite stolen pets with their owners.

This is also part of a broader cultural change I've noticed during my six years living in Vietnam.

Eating dog and cat meat still exists in Vietnam and remains part of the country's history and culture in some places. But attitudes are changing, particularly as more Vietnamese people view dogs and cats as pets and members of the family rather than food.

I think a lot of Western expats are completely unprepared for these cultural differences when they first arrive in Vietnam.

After six years living there, I find it pretty amusing when some Westerners arrive in another country and immediately start judging local attitudes toward animals as if their own cultural standards are universal.

Cultures are different. And cultures change.

In this case, I think it's a positive sign that Vietnamese society is gradually moving away from the consumption of cats and dogs, while authorities are also treating the theft of people's pets as a serious crime.

Good police work. Good news for the people who got their pets back. Hopefully, fewer cats will end up in this situation in the future. πŸ‡»πŸ‡³
